See the frightening robot dog that climbs walls like a spider
A new South Korean robot dog called Marvel tackles heavy challenges such as climbing walls and ceilings.
Robot dogs have been gaining popularity at an increasing rate after the great investments of Boston Dynamics. The yellow robot dog named Spot from Boston Dynamics is probably the most well-known example in this group. However, a new innovation shines from South Korea. The newest robot dog called MARVEL from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, located in South Korea. Let's meet with it.
MARVEL is a new innovation that advances the robot dogs industry
The robot dog MARVEL has not only a sweet name, but also its name stands for “Magnetically Adhesive Robot for Versatile and Expeditious Locomotion.” It was developed by researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, published in Science Robotics.
Marvel has a real superpower despite being only 18 pounds and 13 inches long. It can scale ceilings and flat and curved metal surfaces. How quickly does that happen? Well, between 1.6 and 2 feet per second.
The researchers also noted that MARVEL is able to easily jump between floor, wall, and ceiling settings while overcoming gaps 10 centimeters wide and barriers 5 centimeters high.
Furthermore, Popular Science stated that MARVEL can be the best tool for “inspection scenarios within industrial environments” which can pose great hazard for the humans. It could reach areas on ships, bridges, and tall buildings that are hard to reach.
