Samsung breaks another record in the US patent registration with replacing IBM

IBM, one of the world's largest corporations, was known as the company with the most patents registered in the United States. However, Samsung managed to surpass IBM, which has lost its top point in the amounts of patents registered in the US in 2022. 

Samsung registered 8,513 patents in the US in 2022

Samsung Electronics is reported to have registered 8,513 utility patents in 2022, which was roughly the same as the previous year. Additionally, LG Electronics' patent registrations increased by 5% to 4,580, putting them third on the list. On the other hand, IBM fell to second place with 4,743 registered patents in 2022, a 44% decrease from the previous year.

Reducing the number of patent applications in 2020, the IBM announced that they made about $27 billion profit in intellectual property rights from 1996 to 2022.

We decided to no longer pursue numeric patent leadership, but remain an intellectual property powerhouse and continue to have one of the strongest portfolios in the world in our priority technologies.” IBM research head Dario Gil stated.

Automobile company Toyota has taken its place in fourth spot. The number of patents Toyota registered increased by 11% compared to the previous year.
