Rolls-Royce successfully tests its first modern jet engine running on hydrogen
Rolls-Royce and easyJet announced that they have broken new ground by successfully testing a hydrogen-fueled jet engine.
While climate changes that threaten the future of the planet continue to increase their impact day by day, many different sectors are making enormous moves for a greener future. Aviation is also known to be having a big role in the carbon emissions. Rolls-Royce, one of the aircraft engine companies, announced that they have broken new ground in the world together with the European airline company easyJet. Rolls-Royce and easyJet breaks new ground with world's first jet engine running on hydrogen
Rolls-Royce and easyJet have stated they have reached a new aviation milestone with the successful test of the world’s first modern hydrogen-powered jet engine. The test took place at the Ministry of Defense Boscombe Down Open Test Range, UK. Both companies hope the technology will one day eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation industry.
They used a converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A jet engine. The green hydrogen that has been used in the test was brought by EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre) and it was produced using renewable energy at their hydrogen production.
Grazia Vittadini, Chief Technology Officer Designate at Rolls-Royce, stated: “The success of this hydrogen test is an exciting milestone. We only announced our partnership with easyJet in July and we’re already incredibly excited about this landmark achievement. We are pushing the boundaries to unlock the possibilities of carbon-free hydrogen, which could help change the future of flight.”
