The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) imposed bans on 230 apps on an "urgent" and "emergency" basis after thoroughly analyzing 288 apps. Due to the possibility that these apps could have access to the personal data of Indian citizens, the decision was made on the basis of recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

This took place in response to numerous reports of extortion and harassment against individuals who had used these apps to take out small loans. In some instances, interest rates were soaring at an alarming 3,000% per year. Threatening messages and even the release of morphed photos were sent to debtors who were unable to pay. Tragically, several suicides occurred as a result in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

This latest ban follows actions taken against Chinese apps that were deemed a threat to India's sovereignty and security, such as TikTok, Xender, and PUBG Mobile.
