AltspaceVR, Microsoft's social virtual reality platform, offered immersive social space where users could interact with friends and coworkers in 3D avatars. Microsoft has now announced plans to shut down the platform.

AltspaceVR has been in danger of shutting down several times over the years and Microsoft intervened in and the company resulting Altspace VR to function under the umbrella of Microsoft.

However, Microsoft has announced that social virtual reality platform Altspace VR, which will no longer be available on March 10. Nevertheless, Microsoft stated that they will devote more resources to its mixed reality platform, Microsoft Mash as of this date.

“We look forward to what is to come, including our launch of Microsoft Mesh, a new platform for connection and collaboration, starting by enabling workplaces around the world,” Microsoft said.

AltspaceVR may never have reached a huge user base, but the company got into social applications of virtual reality very early. By 2015, AltspaceVR had created a robust social VR platform where users could stroll through serene wood-paneled rooms, watch videos together, or surf the web via a virtual browser.

Spatial sound made the experience more immersive by imitating the way people perceive sound in real-life environments and laying the groundwork for virtual activities.
