Gmail for Android users with foldable devices can now enjoy an enhanced user interface with the recent rollout of a highly anticipated update. Designed specifically to optimize large-screen support on phones and tablets sporting a foldable form factor, this latest update introduces a revamped navigation trail within the Gmail app.

First announced in May, this eagerly awaited upgrade promises to deliver a seamless and intuitive experience, catering to the unique needs and capabilities of foldable devices. With the new UI now becoming available, Gmail users can expect improved functionality and enhanced productivity while utilizing their cutting-edge foldable devices.

The latest update to Gmail for Android introduces a sidebar for foldable devices, where the "compose" button is now located, replacing the floating action button. The bottom bar has been moved to the side, featuring shortcuts for inbox, chat, and meet. Notably, this update appears to be currently exclusive to foldable devices, with the Google Pixel Fold being one of the first devices to showcase the new UI.

However, it is not yet available on other devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which has a different aspect ratio that triggers the tablet interface only when rotated. This new navigation rail in Gmail aligns with Google's approach in optimizing wider form factors for tablets, as seen in other Google apps like Play Store, Photos, and Google Home. While the desktop version of Gmail already utilizes a sidebar interface, it is anticipated that the updated Gmail UI for Android foldables will soon become available on the Play Store for all compatible devices.
