Public charging stations may seem like a lifesaver to smartphone owners who have little to no battery life left and don't have a power bank with them, yet there are some things to consider before using them. The FBI, which J. Edgar Hoover personally oversaw for so many years, has issued that statement.

Avoid utilizing free charging stations in airports, hotels, or retail malls, the FBI's Denver office said. Bad actors have discovered ways to infect devices with malware and monitoring software using open USB ports. Bring your own USB cable and charger, and use an outlet in its place. The FBI offers wise counsel to consumers on how to prevent "juice jacking" in its warnings.
There are some things you can do to protect yourself. For example if you absolutely must use a public charging station, keep your phone locked when charging. If you can charge your phone with the device powered off, you can get the ultimate protection.
