Amazon finally unplugged this service
"The program has not grown to create the impact that [it] had originally hoped," the e-commerce giant stated in its announcement, nearly a decade after its launch. When a customer makes a purchase through the AmazonSmile website, the company donates 0.5 percent of the purchase price to the charity of their choice at no additional cost to the customer. Amazon will give the participating organizations the equivalent of three months' worth of the money they earned through the program in 2022 as a parting gift.
The company plans to "focus its charitable work in other areas where it can make meaningful change" in the future. It gave a few examples of its plans for the future, such as investing $2 billion to build and maintain affordable housing, funding the computer science curriculum for one million students in thousands of schools, and distributing 12 million meals through food banks this year.
