YouTube has officially stated that its recently unveiled 1080p Premium tier is currently being extended to users of the desktop web client.

The “1080p Premium” service, first introduced earlier in the year, was initially launched on iOS devices. This new level of service is a perk exclusive to Premium subscribers, and it enhances many videos by amplifying their bitrate, instead of their resolution. The result is a more detailed, higher quality image with a sharper appearance.

YouTube has recently communicated to The Verge that the 1080p Premium service is in the process of being made available to web users.

The improved 1080p tier will be visible on the web irrespective of a user's Premium subscription status. However, attempting to select it without a paid membership will prompt a message stating the need for a subscription to access the superior quality. Furthermore, YouTube stated that the upgrade is now available on some TV devices, which include Google's non-Android-based Chromecasts and certain game consoles. However, no specific details were shared.

Of significance is the fact that this roll-out marks the first time the 1080p Premium service has been offered outside of iOS devices. Earlier in June, some Android users were spotted utilizing the enhanced bitrate streaming service, but this has yet to become more widespread.
