Due to content it considers "sacrilegious," the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked Wikipedia after slowing access for 48 hours. Bloomberg was informed by a spokesperson for the PTA that the organization has blocked the online encyclopedia for failing to remove the content within the previous few days. Right now Wikipedia can not be reached around the area.

On February 1st, the telecom authority disclosed that it approached the website with a court order to remove "blasphemous" content. The PTA restricted access to Wikipedia for a few days and threatened to completely block the website if it did not comply with its demands or appear before authorities. The organization did not make the entries on Wikipedia that it does not want Pakistanis to see publically available.

Based on internal traffic reports, the Wikimedia Foundation confirmed in a blog post that Pakistan blocked Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. "The Foundation wrote that if it continues, it will also deny everyone access to Pakistan's knowledge, history, and culture."
