Twitter to offer a new feature

Ever since Elon Musk bough Twitter, many things have changed and still changing. The company offered now encrypted DMs. Yet the feature will only be available for verified users.

Feature is as of now simply accessible to confirmed Twitter clients, which incorporates Twitter Blue users. It's not clear if this is just for the early rollout or if encryption will be added to the growing list of features that only users who have Blue Check Marks. According to the company, the verification of both users is currently required for encrypted chat.

The feature will not support group messages or any other kind of media. Additionally, the company discourages users from directly reporting encrypted messages, advising them to report accounts separately if they "encounter an issue with an encrypted conversation participant" on a help page.

Additionally, Twitter suggests that the company is still able to access encrypted DMs without participants' knowledge, noting that "currently, we do not offer protections against man-in-the-middle attacks." The feature is relatively new, so there are many things unknown and shortcomings might also occur. In a tweet, Twitter security engineer Christopher Stanley acknowledged the shortcoming. “We’re not quite there yet, but we’re working on it.”
