In a surprising turn of events, Twitter, once a global social media powerhouse, has experienced a significant decline in downloads since its controversial rebranding as "X" by Elon Musk. A recent report from Apptopia highlights that downloads for the social media platform plummeted by nearly 30% within a mere two months following the rebrand, marking the lowest point in over a decade.

Additionally, the web version of the platform, still accessible via twitter.com, also witnessed a drop in traffic, with global visits down by 10% in August compared to the previous year.

Historically, Twitter had consistently added between 15 to 30 million new users monthly since 2011. However, recent data paints a different picture, indicating that "X" managed to acquire only 10 million users between August and September this year. This substantial drop stands in stark contrast to the platform's performance last year, where it experienced just an 18% decrease in downloads shortly before Elon Musk's acquisition.

The challenges facing "X" extend beyond downloads, as the app has struggled with user retention. In July, daily active users numbered a robust 253 million, which has now dipped to 249 million in September. A similar trend is observable in monthly active users, with a decline from 398 million to 393 million within the same timeframe.

These figures pose a setback for Musk, who had previously expressed ambitions of reaching 1 billion monthly users by 2024. While there was an initial surge in downloads and usage following Musk's takeover in October, sustaining that momentum has proven to be challenging.

Despite these concerning statistics, it's important to underscore Musk's ambitious vision for the platform. Since his acquisition, he has been vocal about transforming "X" to encompass the multifunctionality seen in apps like "WeChat." In line with this vision, new features such as video and voice calls are slated to be integrated into the platform in the future. The fate of "X" remains an intriguing story to watch in the ever-evolving world of social media.
