Meta to unban Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, here's official announcement
Meta announced on Wednesday that it will be reactivating former President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts in the near future, after they were suspended for two years.
Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, stated in a blog post that "We will be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we are doing so with new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses,"
The company took the action of banning Trump's accounts due to his alleged involvement in inciting violence at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, through his statements of support for the perpetrators.
"In light of his violations, he now also faces heightened penalties for repeat offenses — penalties which will apply to other public figures whose accounts are reinstated from suspensions related to civil unrest under our updated protocol.
"In the event that Mr. Trump posts further violating content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation," added Clegg.
Elon Musk took action to unban Trump's Twitter account
Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, reinstated Trump's account in November of last year, 22 months after it had been suspended.
Before entering the building that many Americans consider to be a fortress of democracy, Trump supporters enacted a violent besiege of the Capitol two years ago, overrunning barricades and attacking police.
