In a recent development, the launch of Threads, social media platform touted as a Twitter alternative powered by Instagram, has raised concerns among users. Upon its arrival earlier this week, eager users flocked to register with their Instagram usernames, hoping to explore the new offering. However, an unexpected discovery left many disheartened and frustrated. It was revealed that once a Threads account is created, it cannot be deleted independently. Instead, the only option available is to disable the account.

Even more alarming is the fact that deleting the Threads username automatically erases the corresponding Instagram profile and all its associated content. Addressing the growing dissatisfaction, Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, acknowledged the issue and assured users that Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is actively working on a workaround. In the meantime, he advised users to temporarily deactivate their Threads accounts until a more comprehensive solution is implemented.

Threads offers users the ability to share text-based messages, videos, short GIFs, and embed Instagram posts within threads. While some features such as liking, commenting, reposting, and sharing posts are available, many others are still missing from the platform. However, users can temporarily deactivate their Threads accounts, which hides their profile and any published content.

Additionally, users will soon have access to enhanced search functionality, along with the anticipated inclusion of hashtags, curated tabs, and editing tools for attachments before publication. However, it should be noted that Threads is currently not GDPR-compliant, rendering it inaccessible to users within the European Union. Although a VPN solution may be an option, it carries the risk of compromising data privacy by passing through countries with weaker privacy laws.
