Following media reports about the discovery of this dataset, which was being made available online, the DPC began its investigation into the matter on April 14, 2021. Meta was found to have violated the EU's GDPR obligation for "Data Protection by Design and Default." The inquiry focused on whether Meta was in compliance with this requirement. The DPC's choice was embraced last Friday and made public today. It demonstrates that Meta violated two GDPR regulations.
According to the DPC, in addition to the aforementioned fine, Meta has been ordered to bring its data processing "into compliance by taking a range of specified remedial actions within a particular timeframe." The DPC's decision was supported by all of the EU's other data protection supervisory authorities, who collaborated on the comprehensive inquiry process.
