Elon Musk now aims to remove Twitter's most popular feature
After acquiring Twitter and making changes that sparked user backlash, Elon Musk seems indifferent to the reactions.
Recent interactions on X (formerly known as Twitter) have hinted at a potential change in user features. The platform's owner, Elon Musk, hinted at the removal of the block feature, sparking a flurry of reactions. He mentioned, "Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs. Makes no sense." This came in response to a query from a Tesla enthusiast who questioned the difference between the block and mute features.
While many regard the block function as a protective tool against unwanted interactions, the implication that it could be phased out has not been well-received. Twitter's official stance on blocking, as mentioned on their help page, emphasizes its importance for users to have control over who can contact or follow them. Musk further clarified that the only place the block feature might remain would be for direct messages.

Although the mute option will still be available, it does not serve the same purpose as the block. While the mute function simply prevents a user’s posts from appearing on another's feed without notifying them, the block feature entirely restricts their ability to interact or even view the account. The block feature's significance is highlighted by the increased number of spam responses some users have witnessed on their timelines. Furthermore, public figures have extensively used this feature to eliminate harassment on their feeds.
Despite the initial announcement, the future of the block feature is still uncertain. Musk's history of reversing decisions suggests that the fate of this feature remains in flux. For instance, shortly after announcing the removal of the platform's light-mode option, he backtracked due to popular demand.
