The backlash began when a horse, named Merzouga, was put to sleep after falling down a hill and breaking his left leg during the two-day Ageuma Shinji (Horse Riding) festival in Kuwana, central Japan, in May. Animal abuse topic has become hot and people started to react on social media.
It was reported that 5 more horses were injured in addition to Merzouga at the festival held on May 4-5 this year. The festival has a long history dating back to the Edo period between 1603 and 1868. It is believed that the festival originated as a form of worship for good harvest and protection against evil spirits, yet the world is changing now and these kinds of festivals are seen as bad when they harm animals. Many protests started on social media and people criticized everyone involved.
