Apple Watch Series 1 has retired!

Holding its place as one of the most prominent smartwatch producers, Apple's iconic Apple Watch Series 1 has been retired.

Apple Watch Series 1 has retired!

Last month, Apple introduced its latest timepiece, the Watch Series 9. Shortly after, the tech giant from Cupertino rendered the original Apple Watch obsolete. Currently, Apple's second-generation smartwatch, the Watch Series 1, has found its place on the company's vintage production list. It's essential to distinguish that the terms "vintage" and "obsolete" are not synonymous. For context, the original Apple Watch was launched in 2015, followed by the Watch Series 1 in 2016.

Apple labels products as vintage if they have been out of production for five but less than seven years. The vintage status of the Watch Series 1 indicates that while it's not entirely obsolete, its official support might be limited due to the accessibility of spare parts. If Apple were to categorize it as obsolete, this would mean the Watch Series 1 would no longer receive any official repairs at the company’s official stores or affiliated service centers.

Launched in 2016, the Watch Series 1 was unveiled alongside the Watch Series 2. Serving as the more budget-friendly option between the two, the Watch Series 1 essentially mirrored the hardware of its predecessor but was enhanced with a quicker chipset. At its competitive price point of $369, it quickly gained traction among consumers.

Software updates were extended to both the Apple Watch Series 1 and 2 until 2020. They presently operate on watchOS6. In 2018, the Watch Series 1 was crowned the world's top-selling smartwatch, contributing to a staggering 90 percent of Apple Watch's global sales.
