Apple Watch can precisely predict stress level, study suggests
A new study has revealed that Apple Watch can accurately predict the stress level of the users.
According to the findings of a study carried out by researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada, stress levels can be accurately predicted using the Apple Watch.
Using the ECG sensor on the Apple Watch Series 6, the researchers discovered a strong correlation between the participants' stress levels and their heart rate acceleration and deceleration capacity. A prediction model was then developed and implemented by the researchers using machine learning algorithms.
It is stated that the produced models have a "high level of precision" but a lower recall. The study says that the Apple Watch has "promising" potential for detecting stress levels. Additional data points can be combined to form stress levels with even greater precision due to the wearable's capacity to collect additional health information, such as sleep and activity data.
The researchers hypothesize that the Apple Watch could be used to support mental health care by providing activities like stress-relieving breathing exercises and early detection of mental health changes. Apple's Health app has not yet included a stress score feature, despite competing devices from Samsung, Fitbit, and Garmin offering it for some time.
Apple might soon release Stress score feature after increasing user demand and studies. However, it is not certain for the moment.
