Woman sentenced to death choked on her dinner
On Saturday afternoon, former bartender Miyuki Ueta began to choke while eating in her cell. According to Japanese national broadcaster NHK, workers at the detention center in the southwestern prefecture of Hiroshima tried to get food out of the 49-year-old's mouth, but she was already unconscious. Ueta was taken to the hospital, but less than three hours later, her death was confirmed. According to the Japanese ministry of justice, she perished from suffocation.
After being found guilty of murdering two men she owed money to in 2009 in Tottori prefecture, on Japan's west coast, Ueta was given the death penalty in 2012. She appealed her case and maintained her innocence, but the judge in 2017 upheld her death sentence. The death penalty is a complex and controversial issue for some. Japan still has the death penalty.
