The swindle was run by the group responsible for these attacks for a considerable amount of time, and they made a lot of money doing it. Ad networks make money by displaying billions of advertisements on websites and mobile apps each day and encouraging users to click on them. Every year, this brings in hundreds of billions of dollars.

According to reports, the fraud involved multiple steps. After winning the auction for an advertisement slot, the fraudulent organization used to maliciously stack multiple video advertisements on top of each other. They were simply inserting JavaScript code into that advertisement to take control of that particular slot; they were not attempting to hack or hijack a device or network. The attack is finished by the time the advertisement goes away, leaving almost no trace.
