South Koreans will become one year young with the new law. Here are all the details.
When it comes to Asia everything can be tricky and different. Now with the new law South Koreans will become one year younger. South Koreans will be at least one year younger from today as they passed a new law to adopt the international age census standard.
South Koreans will become one year younger
All judicial and administrative areas in the country will start using the international standard, the calendar age, one year after the National Assembly announced this move to reduce confusion. South Koreans traditionally use the "Korean age system" where a newborn is considered one year old at birth and then aged one year on the first day of each new year.
It was a bit confusing before as they used two calendars. If you asked a South Korean how old they are they would say their age with both Korean and global calendar. The country has gained a global reputation with K-Pop and everything and therefore changing their calendar to global one is no surprise. On the other hand According to Bloomberg, South Koreans will not need to update any documents or IDs.
