Doug Virnig, who contributed to the development of Titan, told CNN that OceanGate uses off-the-shelf technologies such as the Logitech video game controller to save on research and development costs. Virnig said: "It looks a bit cheesy, but if you knew how much technology is packed into this remote, what it's capable of and how much money it costs to develop such a thing; really beyond the standards. So if you can get these components ready and add them to a project that doesn't have timelines and costs for research and development, I think it's a smart choice."
On Sunday morning, Titan embarked on its voyage to the Atlantic Ocean's debris field at a depth of about 3,800 meters. After about 1 hour and 45 minutes, Titan lost contact with the surface ship Polar Prince.
