A homeless kitten in the United Kingdom was found to have neither internal nor external sex organs. The Cats Protection center in Gateshead, northeast England, gave the 15-week-old cat, which was found in excellent health, the name Hope. Fiona Brockbank, the senior field veterinary officer for Cats Protection, stated to the BBC:We think it is extremely unlikely that some internal ectopic ovarian tissue is hidden from the outside world.

rare kitten without genitalsExperts believe that this may be a case of the extremely rare genetic condition known as agenesis. According to Peter Koopman, an Australian professor of developmental biology at the University of Queensland, "During sex development, one or more parts of the sexual anatomy can develop abnormally (dysgenesis, for example, in terms of shape or size) or not at all ("agenesis").Koopman added, "This appears to be an agenesis," which indicates that a developmental pathway is completely blocked as opposed to impeded, slowed down, or enhanced.

The fact that the cat does not have separate development systems for its genitals or reproductive tract makes Hope's case particularly uncommon. Koopman stated, "What is strange is that the genetic circuitry that controls gonad development is normally separate from that which controls the development of the internal reproductive tract and separate again from that which controls the development of external genitalia."

Therefore, it is difficult to imagine how a single genetic mutation could prevent all of these simultaneously. It's possible that multiple mutations took place.Although the likelihood of that is extremely low, this may explain why conditions like Hope the cat's have never been documented before."
