Time reported that the workers were required to read graphic details of NSFW content, such as child sexual abuse, bestiality, murder, suicide, torture, self-harm, and incest, in order to label and filter out toxic data from ChatGPT's training dataset.
Workers faced tough working conditions and low wages. It was reported that employees were paid between $1.32 and $2 an hour, depending on seniority and performance. "I read a detailed description of a man having sex with a dog next to a small child and had recurring nightmares," a Kenyan employee told TIME.
