Moderate earthquake hits western Turkey, causing big panic and injuries
A moderately powerful earthquake hit the western Turkish province of Izmir, causing big panic among residents and injuring several others.
ANKARA, Turkey (TechtUSA) - According to the information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency(AFAD), a moderately powerful 4.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Buca district of Izmir at 03:29 AM local time in Turkey.
It was determined that the earthquake, which was felt in the surrounding provinces, was at a depth of 14.47 kilometers. Due to the earthquak, there was a short-term power outage in some parts of the city. In addition, notifications reached the emergency call center that the some of the buildings are damaged.
Earthquake in Izmir, killing two person and causing 64 injuries
The last statement regarding the earthquake came from Health Minister Fahrettin Koca. Koca said, "A total of 64 people were affected due to panic. 7 people are still under treatment, one of which is severe." However, it is reported that two citizens had heart attack during the earthquake and lost their lives.
After the 4.9 earthquake, 80 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 1.0 to 2.7 occurred. However citizens said that the earthquake's impact was higher than it's magnitude. They said "It was as if a bomb exploded, the shaking was of a very short duration, but at the time of the earthquake, we heard a very loud explosion."
Following the earthquake, the citizens decided to spend the night out in fear. It is now reported that the disaster is under control.
