Meta threatens to block news content in these countries
Over media revenue-sharing legislation, Meta threatens to block news content in Canada.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, claims that the country's proposed Bill C-18 legislation may prevent Canadians from sharing news content. The Online News Act, which was introduced earlier this year by the Liberal government in power, aims to force social media platforms like Facebook into revenue-sharing partnerships with local news organizations.

The News Media Bargaining Code, which Australia passed in early 2021 despite significant opposition from Google and Meta, serves as a model for the legislation. Meta stated that it wanted to be "transparent about the possibility that we may be forced to consider whether we continue to allow the sharing of news content in Canada" in a blog post that was published late on Friday.Meta was not invited to a meeting earlier in the week about the legislation by the House of Commons Heritage Committee, which resulted in the threat. Google's testimony was heard by the panel, but only after the company asked to be included in the proceedings.
Following the denial, Meta stated, "We have always approached our engagement with Canadian public authorities on this legislation in the spirit of honest and fair debate, so we were surprised not to receive an invitation to participate, especially given public comments by lawmakers that this law is targeted at Facebook."
