Massacre at dance studio: Monterey Park shooting leaves 10 dead, 10 injured
The authorities have confirmed that a shooting took place in Monterey Park, California, leaving at least 10 injured and 10 dead. The shooter is still at large and the incident happened during the Lunar New Year celebrations in the area.
MONTEREY PARK, California, US (TechtUSA) - A shooter opened fire at a ballroom dance studio in the Los Angeles area after a Lunar New Year celebration, resulting in the deaths of 10 people and many injured.
This is the fifth mass killing to occur in the United States this month. Additionally, 10 people were injured and transported to hospitals, where their conditions vary from stable to critical, according to Captain Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
The incident occurred in Monterey Park, a city with a population of around 60,000, primarily composed of Asian immigrants from China or first-generation Asian Americans.
Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department stated that people were "pouring out of the location screaming" when officers arrived at the studio around 10:30 p.m.
According to Capt. Meyer, the authorities were looking into whether the shooting was motivated by race. He stated, "We will examine every angle to determine whether it was a hate crime or not."
Seung Won Choi, who has a business in the area, said that 3 people who escaped from the attack came in and told him to lock the door.
Choi stated that according to the claims of those who took refuge in the workplace, the attacker was carrying a rifle and had spare bullets.
