At least 55 people in 12 states have Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a type of bacteria that is resistant to the majority of antibiotics. One person has passed away so far, and three others have lost their vision for good. The agency stated that the majority of those who became ill reported using the eye drop Artificial Tears, but it has not linked the infection to it.
It stated, "CDC recommends that clinicians and patients discontinue the use of EzriCare Artificial Tears immediately until the epidemiological investigation and laboratory analyses are complete."
People who have used the eye drop up until this point have both contracted infections and lost their vision for good. In addition, patients have developed respiratory infections and urinary tract infections. According to reports, the bacterium has also caused one person's death because it entered the bloodstream.
