The activist's hunger strike has been huge on social media gathering everyone's attention. The 53-year-old doctor was jailed in 2018 for supporting protests by female activists against Iran's hijab policy. According to Iran's Human Rights Activists Agency (HRANA), Meysami was tried and sentenced to 5 years in prison for "posing a threat to national security" and "making propaganda against the regime". Lawyer Mohammed Moghimi, who said "My client's life is in danger" before the photos in question went viral on social media, claimed that the human rights activist had dropped to 52 kilograms and was beaten for refusing to be transferred to another prison.
After photos of Meysami went viral on social media, Iranian state media denied on Friday last week that the activist had gone on a hunger strike and said she was "in good shape".
