There were panic in the sky caused by a bird running into an airplane. An American Airlines flight's engine caught fire as a result of a bird strike, requiring the pilots to turn around shortly after takeoff and return the aircraft to John Glenn Columbus International Airport early on Sunday.

American Airlines Flight 1958 landed safely, no one was hurt, and the airport was only closed for a few minutes while the plane returned for an emergency landing, according to airport officials. The number of passengers on the flight was not available from a spokesperson for the airport.

Birds struck the engine shortly after takeoff as the plane was heading toward Phoenix when it left around 7:45 a.m. The plane didn't leave the Central Ohio region, so officials at the airport weren't sure how long it was in the air before it was rerouted to the Columbus airport.

According to USA TODAY, Michael Begier, the national coordinator for the USDA's Airport Wildlife Hazards Program, improved reporting by pilots, tower staff, mechanics, and others contributed significantly to the increase.
