Airplane mode era is over, passengers can now surf the Internet during flight
The European Commission has decided to make the 5G frequency bands available for airplanes.
The European Commission is preparing to end the 'airplane mode' application on flights within the European Union (EU) countries. The Commission has announced the deadline for member states to make 5G frequency bands available for airplanes.
Airplane mode will become obsolete in the EU as of next year
Airplane mode will now be obsolete on flights because EU (European Union) Commission has taken a decision that airlines can use 5G technology. Moreover, EU has announced the deadline for making 5G frequency bands available for airplanes as December 30, 2023. The EU member countries will comply with this implementation.
As of this date, passengers will now be able to use all the features of their phones during the flight. Travelers between EU countries will be able to use data-heavy apps that stream music and video as well as calls.
On the other hand, the EU Commission has arranged certain frequency bands for airplanes since 2008 and allowed some services to offer internet access in the air. However, this service was slow as it required connecting the aircraft to a satellite on the ground.
As European Commission reports, the new system will utilize higher download speeds provided by 5G technology, that is over 100Mbps, allowing a movie to be downloaded in just a few minutes.
