In August 2022, when German security researcher Matthias Marx purchased the device from eBay for $68—a steal at roughly half the listed price. But there's more. Marx had unintentionally purchased sensitive and identifying information on thousands of people for less than $70. The biometric fingerprint and iris scans of 2,632 people were accompanied by photos, detailed descriptions, and information about their nationalities, according to a report from The New York Times.
The researcher told the Times that the irresponsible handling of this high-risk technology is unbelievable. We can't understand why the manufacturer and people who used to be in the military don't care that used devices with sensitive data are being sold online,” he added. According to the Times, the majority of the information in the SEEK II was gathered on individuals the United States military had identified as terrorists or wanted individuals.
