A man was saved after being dead for 70 minutes
David Mills, 67, shocked doctors after he had a less than 1 percent chance of surviving after suffering a heart attack at his home in Southern California. His 25-year-old grandson stepped in, and it took more than an hour to resuscitate him, along with 911 staff and hospital staff.
Mills, who was taken to the hospital, was found to have a blocked artery and a stent was placed in his heart. But because he had no pulse for 70 minutes, doctors worried he would have trouble making a full recovery.
With heart attacks usually, witnesses wait for paramedics to arrive, which may be too late. People who experience cardiac arrest still have traces of oxygen in their blood, and manual CPR can keep that blood circulating until help arrives.
