7.6 magnitude earthquake strikes southern Turkey again, buildings collapsed during live broadcast
A new earthquake measuring 7.6 in magnitude hit the Kahrmanmaras province in southern Turkey on February 6th, 2023 at 1:24 PM local time, following an initial quake with a magnitude of 7.7 that resulted in the death of hundreds and injury of thousands in the same area.
KAHRAMANMARAS, (MARASH) Turkey (TechtUSA) - At 1:24 p.m. local time, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the southern Kahramanmaraş province. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Elbistan district, as recorded by the Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) agency.
According to local observatory agencies, the magnitude of the second significant earthquake had been measured at 7.5 MW, which was later revised to 7.6 MW by the AFAD. Since journalists were in the area at the time of the earthquake, it was captured on live cameras by numerous media outlets.

This was the second earthquake to occur in the aftermath of the 7.8-magnitude quake that struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria earlier on Monday. The quake resulted in over 1,400 deaths and left thousands injured.
A second major earthquake has hit Turkey and Syria as the death toll from the first quake rises to over 1,400
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that at least 912 individuals lost their lives in Turkey due to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on Monday morning. In Syria, the earthquake resulted in the deaths of at least 560 individuals.
The devastating earthquake resulted in the collapse of numerous buildings. During the live broadcast footage shared in the Twitter, a building has collapsed in Diyarbakir after the second-earthquake, the affected city which is near to Kahramanmaras. Emergency units were trying to evacuate the victims at the time of collapse.

Over 2,800 buildings collapsed in southern Turkey
The second earthquake also caused significant damage to other buildings. According to information obtained from local sources, over 2,800 buildings in southern Turkey have collapsed as a result of the earthquake.
India, the European Union, and Britain have offered assistance
In response to the devastating earthquake that resulted in over 1,400 deaths in Turkey and Syria, India has decided to dispatch search and rescue teams, along with medical assistance and relief supplies.
The European Union has announced that it will send rescue teams to Turkey after the country requested assistance from the EU.
The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, stated that the UK is prepared to offer help in any way possible and expressed his sympathies for the people of Turkey and Syria.
Aftershocks expected to continue
The professor informed Al Jazeera that the aftermath of the earthquake will continue to impact the area for some time.
The expert also mentioned that there have been reports of multiple aftershocks of earthquakes ranging from magnitude four to five and stated that even these aftershocks are a cause for concern.
