2,153 prisoners pardoned on Buddha's birthday

It was stated that the amnesty decision was issued due to Vesak Day, which is celebrated on May 5, the Buddha's birthday in Buddhism. Buddha is a spiritual leader still on this day and his affects continue to linger. In the statement, it was stated that the amnesty decision was made for "humanitarian reasons and it was aimed to ensure the peace of the people".

While some disagree with the pardoning decision, some people supported the move. For public safety this act might be dangerous according to some citizens. The junta's decision also coincided with the visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister, China Gang.
During his visit yesterday, China met with General Min Aung Hlaing, who seized power in 2021 with a coup. He thus became the highest-ranking Chinese official to meet with the general since the coup.
