Zhengzhou is home to Foxconn, the largest iPhone manufacturer in China, and it has been the epicenter of unrest throughout this week. In the past few days, protests and multiple clashes with security personnel have resulted from latent worker unhappiness growing into actual protests.

After hiring the most recent batch of hires, Foxconn eventually apologized for a "technical error" involving pay. The company claimed that benefits and compensation had been misrepresented. The company offered each protesting new recruit CNY 10,000 (approximately $1,400) in exchange for their resignation and exit from the workplace.

Additionally, it appears that the offer may have been a little too successful, as over 20,000 Foxconn employees have accepted it. Most of them were new hires who took the money and left without working on production lines. More than 200,000 people worked at the factory before the trouble started. All of this has the potential to have a significant negative impact on the shipments and production of iPhones. If the "current issue" continues through December, 10 million fewer iPhones than planned will be produced, according to some analysts. Others predict that the number of iPhone 14 Pros sold during the holiday shopping season will be 25% to 30% lower than "normal."
