The foldable smartphone industry evolves rapidly
The future of the smartphone sector might lie in the foldable smartphone market. Recent data indicates that foldable smartphones are advancing swiftly.
China's foldable smartphone market has seen a significant uptick. The latest data from CINNO Research showcases an impressive 72% growth in the foldable smartphone segment, based on year-over-year figures. This surge is particularly notable considering the overall smartphone sales in the country have been on a decline for nearly three years.
Huawei's recent entry into the foldable market with the Huawei Mate X3 has proven to be a game-changer. With its innovative design and specifications, the Mate X3 has recorded robust sales in the second quarter of 2023. Furthermore, the software enhancements have further solidified its position, catapulting it to the top of the sales charts. On the other hand, Oppo and Samsung have secured the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. Samsung's position can be attributed largely to the popularity of their previous models, the Fold 4 and Flip 4, as their latest devices have only recently hit the shelves.
The foldable smartphone industry evolves rapidly
For the first half of 2023, Vivo, Honor, and Xiaomi found themselves in the 4th, 5th, and 6th positions in terms of sales. Huawei emerged as a dominant player, capturing half of the entire foldable market share, followed closely by Samsung with roughly 40%. Other manufacturers are also showing potential with increasing sales in recent months.
In terms of design preferences, the horizontal flip or the 'Fold' form factor seems to be the crowd favorite due to its expansive display. This design has contributed to 55% of the total sales. Huawei leads the pack in this category, with Samsung and Honor following closely. Conversely, the vertical display or the 'Flip' design is slowly gaining traction among users.
On the premium end of the spectrum, Huawei stands out in China's ultra-high-end foldable smartphone segment, with devices priced over 10000 Yuan (approximately $1383).
