Teardown of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 uncovers cutting-edge shock dispersion layer
The teardown of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has revealed an advanced shock dispersion layer, showcasing the device's innovative approach to durability enhancement.
The latest addition to Samsung's foldable phone lineup is the Galaxy Z Fold 5, touted as one of the top options available. Samsung claims that both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 models meet durability standards, featuring Armor Aluminum frames, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for the cover screens and back panels, and an IPX8 water resistance rating.

Moreover, Samsung has introduced an extra layer to the foldable displays, aiming to enhance shock dispersion. Renowned tech YouTuber Zack Nelson, known as JerryRigEverything, dissected the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 in a video, showcasing this new shock dispersion layer.
Disassembling a foldable phone, as highlighted in JerryRigEverything's video, is a complex task. After warming the corners of the inner displays and removing the plastic bumper, Nelson encountered challenges in safely detaching the display from the frame.
Nonetheless, Nelson successfully removed the screen, uncovering Samsung's innovative shock dispersion layer. This layer appears as a black foam piece with circular perforations. Understanding its functionality and effectiveness in boosting the phone's durability is somewhat challenging, and real-world testing, such as drop tests, might be necessary to gauge its impact.
Nelson acknowledged that Samsung's limited mention of the shock dispersion layer might be due to its relatively unexciting nature. The hinge mechanism, a more prominently discussed upgrade this year, also underwent scrutiny by JerryRigEverything. The hinge incorporates a dual rail structure, designed to distribute external impacts. This is evident from the numerous screws, springs, and other intricate components composing the three-part hinge. Addressing a common complaint from previous foldable models, Samsung's engineers have successfully minimized the hinge gap, allowing the phone to lay completely flat when folded.
