TCL's new smartphone arrives with a significant feature
Aiming to establish its position in the smartphone world, TCL introduces its new models with a rather intriguing feature.
TCL's innovation in eye protection, known as the NxtPaper technology, previously reserved for specific tablets and displays, has now been extended to phones. With the introduction of the 40 NxtPaper 4G and 5G, users can now experience a display that replicates the feel of paper.
The TCL 40 NxtPaper 4G showcases a 6.78-inch LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution at a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. In contrast, the 5G model is fitted with a slightly smaller 6.6-inch screen offering HD+ resolution, though it maintains the same refresh rate. Driving the performance of the 4G phone is the Helio G88, paired with 8GB of RAM, which can be augmented with up to 8GB of virtual RAM, and 256GB of internal storage.
In the hardware department, the NxtPaper 5G is powered by the Dimensity 6020 chipset and comes with 256GB storage. However, it operates with a reduced RAM of 6GB, which can be supplemented with an additional 6GB of virtual RAM. Both models are equipped with a triple camera setup, headlined by a 50MP primary sensor. The 4G model is complemented with a 5MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro lens. Meanwhile, the 5G variant features a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth sensor. Selfie enthusiasts will appreciate the 32MP front camera on the 4G variant, while the 5G version offers an 8MP sensor.

A standout feature is the e-reader mode that turns the display into grayscale, providing a more comfortable reading experience. Coupled with a special case and a T-Pen stylus, users can utilize the phone akin to a notepad. The NxtPaper technology incorporates several layers, enhancing the tactile experience of the stylus to mirror that of a real pen on paper.
For audio aficionados, the 40 NxtPaper 4G provides stereo speakers integrated with DTS 3D Boom Sound technology. It also retains the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, which is absent in the 5G model. In terms of battery, the 4G version supports a 5,010mAh capacity with 33W fast charging, while the 5G counterpart comes with a 5,000mAh battery and supports 15W charging.
Those in Europe can anticipate the 4G model's release in September, priced at €199, which equates to roughly $215. The 5G variant, priced at €249 or around $269, is set to launch in October. However, TCL has remained silent about its release strategy for other regions.
