In the holiday quarter of 2022, smartphone shipments worldwide experienced a significant decline. This was the biggest drop ever recorded in the market, and overall shipments also fell significantly last year. Worldwide smartphone sales decreased by 18.3% year-over-year in the fourth and final quarter of 2022, according to a new report. However, the overall market also experienced a notable decline last year, falling by 11.3%. The market shipped over 300 million handsets in the fourth quarter of 2022, down from 367.6 million in 2021. Interestingly, Xiaomi, Apple, and Samsung occupied the top three spots on this list. However, during this time, the majority of top brands experienced a significant decline. In Q4 2022, the iPhone maker experienced a year-over-year decline of nearly 15%, while Samsung also experienced a decline of almost 16%. In a similar vein, Xiaomi experienced a decline of 26.3% in the fourth quarter of 2022. To put it another way, the majority of brands suffered during this time. The smartphone market as a whole will follow a similar pattern throughout 2022. From 1.359 billion units shipped in 2021, global deliveries decreased to 1.2 billion units in 2022.
