Samsung is currently working on a rollable screen phone
The South Korean tech giant, Samsung, after their foldable smartphones, now delves into phones with rollable screens.
Samsung is poised to spearhead the next wave of smartphone innovations by 2025, as they gear up to commence mass production of smartphones with rollable screens. This initiative doesn't come as a surprise, given the company's previous showcases of avant-garde screen technologies. Samsung made a strong impression at the 2022 K-Display event by introducing prototypes of rollable screens, foldable tablets, and intriguing products labeled "Flex G" and "Flex S."
The 2023 SID Display Week in the U.S. further showcased Samsung's commitment to flexible displays. Attendees were wowed by a 12.4-inch flexible rollable OLED panel by Samsung Display, which remarkably expanded from a neat 49 millimeters to a staggering 254.4 millimeters, achieving a 5-fold increase in size.

The allure doesn't stop at flexibility; a borderless design is also on the horizon. Reports have suggested collaborations between industry giants like Samsung, LG, and Apple to craft OLED displays devoid of any front-facing borders. The ultimate objective is a zero-border-width screen, ensuring an unbroken, immersive visual experience for users.
Apple's interest in flexible display technology is further underscored by a patent submission for devices with rollable or scrollable displays. There are hints that Apple might introduce this feature in future iterations of iPhones, iPads, or even Macbooks. Additionally, Apple is rumored to introduce a foldable screen MacBook by 2026.
While these innovations sound exciting, they come with their set of challenges. Both Samsung Display and LG Display are investing efforts to perfect the Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) and Under Panel Camera (UPC) technologies. Ensuring adequate antenna space in such futuristic designs poses another challenge. With these technological hurdles to overcome, both industry experts and consumers are keenly anticipating the ushering in of a new epoch of smartphone design.
