Samsung gears up on a new camera sensor
South Korean tech giant Samsung announced its efforts on a new camera sensor. What features does this new sensor possess?
Samsung has raised the bar in smartphone camera technology, launching a 200MP camera with its Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, the tech giant isn't stopping there. Speculations suggest that Samsung is gearing up to take another leap in 2024 with three fresh sensors, notably, a groundbreaking 440MP camera.
Recent updates from the tipster Revegnus indicate that Samsung is in the midst of producing a 50MP GN6 sensor, which boasts an impressive 1.6μm pixel size. Alongside this, a 200MP HP7 sensor with a 0.6μm pixel size is also in the pipeline. But it's the 440MP HU1 sensor that's catching the most attention, though its exact pixel size remains under wraps.

These three sensors are anticipated to enter mass production around the latter half of 2024. Interestingly, Revegnus hints that these state-of-the-art sensors might not even feature in Samsung's own products.
The 50MP ISOCELL GN6 is believed to be the next in line after the ISOCELL GN1 and ISOCELL GN2 camera sensors. With its 1.6μm pixel size, it outdoes the ISOCELL GN2’s 1.4μm and could rival Sony’s IMX989 sensor, positioning itself as a potential frontrunner for flagship devices. Yet, insiders suggest that this GN6 sensor might not find its home in Samsung phones but might be a top pick for Chinese manufacturers.
While the 200MP HP7 sensor was once envisioned for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, its production was halted due to exorbitant costs. Nonetheless, Revegnus points to the development of another sensor, a 320MP variant. There's speculation that this sensor might be featured in the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Given that the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 chipset is compatible with 320MP cameras and forthcoming Snapdragon chips might share this compatibility, there's a chance that 320MP sensors could become the next mainstream feature, following the 200MP trend.
