Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event took place today in Seoul, South Korea, where the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 was unveiled. A slight enhancement over the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the latest iteration features a new hinge design enabling it to fold completely flat. It's also powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, a feature found in the flagship S23 series.

Those familiar with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will find the new model's design strikingly similar. The phone retains its previous generation's camera module and ingress protection (IPX8). However, Samsung has innovated the hinge to a new teardrop shape that allows the device to close completely, enabling users to operate it at any angle. The Z Fold 5 is marginally slimmer than its predecessor, at 13.4mm in thickness when folded, compared to the Fold 4's 14.2mm. It's also lighter by 10g, with the Z Fold 4 weighing in at 263g.

The displays remain largely unchanged. The outer display is 6.2 inches with a resolution of 2316x904px, while the AMOLED panel features a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X interior screen offers a 2176x1812px resolution, with a similarly adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. The main screen can reach a peak brightness of 1,750 nits.

Hardware upgrades in the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 are minimal. It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, but the camera system remains unaltered. The rear boasts a 50MP primary camera, along with a 50MP wide-angle sensor, and a 10MP zoom camera. For selfies, there's a 10MP camera on the cover screen and a 4MP under-display camera on the inside.

Fueling the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a 4,400mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging support. The software front runs Android 13-based One UI 5.1.1, with added features like a redesigned taskbar and a two-handed drag-and-drop feature. The accompanying S Pen has also been made 40% thinner.

As for the price and availability, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is available for pre-order in select markets from today and shipping will begin on August 11. It's offered in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream. The 256GB variant is priced at $1,799, while the 512GB version comes at $1,919, and the 1TB storage option will cost you $2,159.
