iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will share this feature
Introduced by Apple in recent weeks, the echoes of the iPhone 15 series persist, and the company seems to be settling on some aspects of the iPhone 16 already.
Apple's new iPhone lineup has been the talk of the town, with quality-of-life upgrades making waves in the tech world. Among the range, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has caught particular attention due to its periscope camera boasting a 5x optical zoom. Though one might expect such an advanced feature to remain exclusive to the Pro Max, it appears the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro will also benefit from this technology, leveling the playing field between the two Pro models.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max's tetraprism lens is a fascinating innovation. It accommodates a longer focal length without bulking up the phone. By cleverly refracting light within the lens, it virtually extends the distance between the lens and the sensor. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, currently sports a 3x optical zoom. Thus, the introduction of the tetraprism lens to the iPhone 16 Pro will harmonize optical zoom capabilities across both Pro devices.

A report by Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned supply chain analyst, offers insights into why this lens is limited to the iPhone 15 Pro Max for now. It's not about exclusivity but rather a production challenge. The tetraprism lens's intricate design requires specialized manufacturing techniques. Presently, Largan stands as the sole producer, leading to a bottleneck in the supply chain. However, Kuo's intel suggests a potential easing of this constraint. By next year, another company, Genius, might be roped in to manufacture these lenses. This addition could expand the lens's presence to more iPhone models, including the eagerly anticipated iPhone 16 Pro.
