iPhone 15 Pro durability questioned in comparison to iPhone 14 Pro, here's why
The durability of the iPhone 15 Pro is being called into question when compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro, and the primary concern appears to be its curved edges, as highlighted in a drop test.
The new iPhone 15 lineup, particularly the Pro models, comes packed with exciting features such as USB-C charging, improved cameras, a customizable action button, and more. However, there may be a significant downside: potential fragility.
iPhone 15 Pro durability questioned in comparison to iPhone 14 Pro, here's why
The iPhone 15 Pro models have shifted from stainless steel to a titanium composition and feature more rounded edges. Apple claimed that this change should enhance the phone's durability and reduce its weight. Nevertheless, the results from the first major drop test posted online paint a different picture.
Sam Kohl, from AppleTrack, made a journey all the way to Australia to get an early look at the phone and conduct a drop test. Kohl performed a direct comparison between the iPhone 15 Pro and its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro, repeatedly dropping both from various heights. Initially, the iPhone 14 Pro exhibited minor dings before the iPhone 15 Pro when dropped from pocket and chest height. However, both phones remained mostly undamaged after the first few drops.
As the test progressed, the situation worsened for the iPhone 15 Pro. After back, side, and extreme drops, the iPhone 14 Pro remained largely functional, while the iPhone 15 Pro suffered extensive damage and became entirely nonfunctional. In fact, it broke into two pieces.
Kohl concluded that the curved edges of the iPhone 15 Pro were more responsible for the issues than the titanium construction, but either way, this is not a promising sign for the phone's durability. He advised that individuals who typically go without a case may want to reconsider that choice with the new version of the phone.
It's important to note that a single YouTube test doesn't provide a definitive assessment of the phone's durability. Time will reveal whether the iPhone 15 is genuinely less durable. The phone officially went on sale in the U.S. recently, so those prone to dropping their phones should exercise caution.
