Huawei starts to grow again in the smartphone market

Chinese technology giant Huawei appears to initiate a resurgence in the smartphone market where it experienced a decline for quite a long time.

Huawei starts to grow again in the smartphone market

In the second quarter of 2023, Huawei has proven itself as the leading light in the Chinese smartphone market, as per the most recent data from Counterpoint Research, a market research firm. Although major manufacturers saw a general decrease in sales in the quarter, Huawei stood out with an impressive year-on-year growth of 58%.

The upsurge in Huawei's sales is attributed to its return to regular product release cycles, capitalizing on its robust brand image and comprehensive offline distribution channels across major cities. This tactic led to a boost in sales once the company navigated through the initial product shortages.

Other manufacturers like Realme and Apple also saw positive growth in the second quarter, while Vivo came out on top with a market share of 17.7%. Despite facing some trials in the first half of 2023, Counterpoint Research anticipates a slight drop in China's smartphone market sales for the entire year. While improvements are likely in the second half compared to the first, a substantial bounce back might be tough due to enduring market challenges.

The emphasis Huawei places on its flagship series, coupled with the recent introduction of mid-range and flagship phones like the Nova 11 series and P60 series, has been pivotal in driving its sales surge. The impending release of the Mate 60 series, rumored to flaunt an impressive camera setup, is expected to further augment their sales. Additionally, Huawei is prepared to debut their most recent Harmony OS 4.0 on 4th August, which is set to further elevate their smartphone experience.

There are also indications that Huawei is gearing up to recommence the mass production of its 5G mobile chip with the support of domestic collaborators. While overall Chinese smartphone sales saw a 4% YoY decrease in Q2 2023, the 618 e-commerce festival provided some much-needed relief in June, kindling hope for an improved second half of the year.
