How are global smartphone sales doing, you wonder?

The third quarter, spanning from July to September, has recently concluded. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Apple and Samsung continued their lead in the global smartphone sales by holding 10 top positions in Q2 of 2023. Now, fresh data concerning the performance of the smartphone market in Q3 has been released. Globally, the smartphone market encountered a slowdown with an 8% decline in shipments year-on-year. This drop, however, is milder when compared to the previous quarter's results.

Although global smartphone sales have been on the decline for nine successive quarters, falling by 8% YoY in Q3 of 2023, there was a silver lining. The sales increased by 2% compared to the figures of Q2 2023, suggesting a hopeful future. This decline is primarily attributed to the slowed recovery in consumer demand. Nevertheless, Counterpoint remains optimistic, forecasting a positive surge toward the close of the year. This anticipation is backed by factors like the launch of the iPhone 15 series, festive events in India, the 11.11 sales in China, and the general holiday season.

Interestingly, the Middle East and Africa (MEA) was the sole region that experienced a YoY growth in Q3. Conversely, more developed markets saw notable reductions but are projected to bounce back in the upcoming Q4 sales.

Samsung maintained its leadership in the global smartphone market during Q3, boasting a 20% market share. Its A-series devices were particularly sought after. However, the response to the company's fifth-generation foldable phones was varied. While the Flip 5 overshadowed the Fold 5 in sales, Apple secured the second position, holding a 16% market share, despite the limited release of the iPhone 15 series. Xiaomi ranked third, followed by Vivo and OPPO in fourth and fifth places, respectively. These three Chinese giants fortified their footing both in their homeland and in India, albeit they scaled down their global outreach.

On another note, 34% of the market share comprised of other brands such as Honor, Huawei, and the Transsion Group. Impressively, these brands were the sole entities that marked a YoY growth in Q3, while other brands faced a double-digit decline.
