The recently unveiled Pixel 8 launch event showcased an exciting development for the Call Screen feature on Pixel devices: the introduction of Contextual Replies. This feature not only answers calls on users' behalf but also empowers them to intelligently discern which calls warrant attention and which ones can be ignored. As the name implies, it's designed to assist in distinguishing between important and less crucial calls, all while engaging in a more natural conversation.

Call Screen operates by assessing the urgency of the call during the conversation. In addition to saving time, it aids in reducing the nuisance of spam callers, who are more likely to disconnect when confronted with this advanced feature. Users can even opt to enable it for contacts on their list, where Google Assistant will offer a warm greeting before inquiring about the urgency of the call.

What sets Contextual Replies apart is that it provides call transcriptions, enabling users to make informed decisions about whether to answer or not. This marks a step beyond the conventional Call Screen feature, which allows users to respond with a simple tap without answering the call. Notably, this feature has been spotted by @Mishaal Rehman on various Pixel smartphones, including older models like the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel 6 series. Its availability on the Pixel Watch, however, remains unverified.

At the Pixel 8 Launch event, Google presented practical examples of how this feature can filter important calls. For instance, it demonstrated how an airline representative inquired about ticketing options, and an AI bot responded with, "Okay, let me try to get the person you’re trying to reach on the line."
