Google Pixel aims to capture iPhone's market share

Google's smartphone brand, Pixel, is gearing up to go head-to-head with iPhone in its new models.

While Google Pixel phones have yet to clinch a dominant position in the global smartphone market, recent trends highlight an uptick in their adoption, particularly in Japan. Data from Counterpoint Research, as quoted by Bloomberg, showcases that the market share for Google Pixel phones in Japan has surged to 12%, a significant leap from the mere 2% recorded in Q2 2021. This transition in the market landscape coincides with Apple's diminishing grasp, where its iPhone market share tapered from 58% to 46% within the same time frame.

This shift isn't trivial. Historically, Apple's iPhones have maintained a stronghold in the Japanese smartphone arena. However, the rising traction for Pixel phones can be attributed to a combination of factors such as their competitively priced offerings, superior camera functionalities, and seamless compatibility with Google services.

Another variable steering this change is the depreciating yen. With the Pixel phone's availability being limited to a handful of nations and the yen plummeting to its lowest in over three decades, Japan has emerged as an economically viable hub for procuring these devices.

While Google's prominence in Japan is accentuated by the retreating market shares of other Android contemporaries, not all have faced the same fate. Sharp's market presence elevated from 8% to 11%, and Sony experienced a bump from 5% to 6%. Conversely, Samsung maintained its 6% share, while Oppo encountered a slight dip, descending from 6% to 5%. Despite these developments, it's plausible that Apple might recoup its market stance with the introduction of the iPhone 15 series, even if it entails an additional $100 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max due to the elimination of a smaller storage variant. On the horizon, Google is prepping for the launch of its latest Pixel devices, which is scheduled for the coming Wednesday.
